Charles "Hos" Hoskins
The Maricopa County Treasurer is responsible for collecting all real and personal property taxes for the state,
county and incorporated cities and towns, school and special districts, and then distributing those funds
to the various jurisdictions. With more than 30 years experience in the Arizona property management system
following a career in the U.S. Air Force, Charles "Hos" Hoskins is ideally suited to accomplish these duties.
Like many Arizonans, Hoskins first came to the state as a young fighter pilot at Luke Air Force Base. After
flying 274 combat missions in Vietnam and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, "Hos" retired from
the Air Force and he and his wife moved to Arizona in 1975.
He began his new career working for the Arizona Board of Tax Appeals - first as an appraiser and then clerk. Nine
years later he joined the Department of Revenue as Assistant Director of the Property and Valuation and Equalization
Division. Later he became director of the entire department.
In 1989 "Hos" left government service and became a property tax consultant with a national firm serving several
hundred clients all over the Southwest.
"Hos" retired in 1995 and in 1996 lost a very close race for Maricopa County Assessor. He was later appointed
to the State Board of Equalization, which is an agency charged with hearing and deciding appeals of property
valuations and classifications. As a member of that board he heard more than five-thousand appeals.
The County Treasurer is an elected position with a four-year term. Hoskins was appointed by the Board of
Supervisors in November 2007 to fulfill the vacancy when his predecessor resigned to seek another office. His
term expires January 1, 2009.
He has taught property tax classes at a private real estate school and written several articles on the Arizona
property tax system.
"Hos" has been married to Eleanor for 50 years. They have a son, daughter, and two grandchildren.
